This section attempts to highlight some of the gross human rights violations, racial hatred, the effects of media suppression, distortion and bias, that still occur around the world -- both near and far from home.

Human Rights and Justice Issues

It has been 50 years since the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights and yet the abuses continue to grow.

Mainstream Media

Journalists are subject to torture, incarceration, beatings and even death just for reporting something that those in power want suppressed.

Racism

While the World Wide Web is a great proponent for the ideals of free speech, it can also be a breeding ground harbouring hatred. Racism has had a long history, accompanying colonialism, but in the modern era, is unfortunately widespread.

Women’s Rights

A never-ending struggle for women is to attain their full rights in society. Media attention on women who help and fight for certain causes is distorted, concentrating only on a few people like the late Diana and Mother Terresa but hardly ever reporting on the thousands of others who do similar work.

Rights of Indigenous PeopleNew page

There are approximately 370 million indigenous people spanning 70 countries, worldwide. Historically they have often been dispossessed of their lands, or in the center of conflict for access to valuable resources because of where they live, or, in yet other cases, struggling to live the way they would like. Indeed, indigenous people are often amongst the most disadvantaged people in the world.
