Font (or style of text) preferences

Use the “Save Preference” button once you make your selection below. Why is font selection important?

Font selection

These fonts may help improve legibility on your system. How?

Traditional look

Modern look

There are two families of fonts, where different ones will help different people read on the web more easily:

Traditional look
With this style all characters have small strokes (serifs) at the end of the main strokes of each character. This is supposed to help some people read text more easily.
Modern look
With this modern look, these fonts are without the small strokes at the end of the main strokes of each character. The simpler style is meant to be easier for other groups of people to read.

Please note that the preference is saved only as a “cookie” (see below for explanation) which your browser stores, so if you view this site on another computer, your settings will not be remembered.

Why set font preferences?

The type of font or text you read on the computer screen is important. It can help or hinder your ability to read web pages well.

Because computers systems come in all varieties and capabilities, web designers have a tough task picking the right font for web pages. For example,

  • Fonts selected by the designer may not exist on some user’s systems;
  • Fonts may exist, but may render poorly on some computer systems through no-one’s fault;
  • The designer’s selection may not suit everyone’s tastes;
  • The designer’s selection may not be accessible for all.

While this is no perfect answer to all the different tastes, I am attempting to provide some customization to help you read the site better through a few popular fonts designed to help reading online, (as well as a couple of fall-back options).

Setting text size

To resize the text, please see your browser’s documentation. As a quick tip (may not always work):

  • On most modern browsers, if you are using a mouse with a wheel, you can press ctrl on your keyboard while you scroll with the mouse wheel, up and down.
  • On modern browsers you can sometimes use ctrl+ or ctrl- for the same effect
  • Mac users can try the Command key instead of ctrl.
  • In Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (the big blue “e” icon on most computer systems) you can go to the View menu and select Text Size.

Your preferences are stored in a cookie. What does this mean?

A cookie is a small piece of text that a browser can store on your computer system. They are harmless and I use them here just to store your preference. The next time you visit the site, your web browser sends this cookie only back to this site, so that this web site can be sure to present the content as per your preference.
