  1. New!A new page providing deeper, historical geopolitical context to the Middle East situation has been added. After the Second World War, with former Imperial Europe weakened, countries around the world had a chance to break for their freedom away from colonial rule. This struggle for freedom and the Cold War had a geopolitical impact on the Middle East. Control of resources and access to oil became paramount, to the extent that dictators and human rights abusers were supported. Within this backdrop, we see another complex reason for the rise of terrorism and extremism. Find Out More »

Tip: how to to highlight updated parts of pages

Most updates are made to existing pages. This is how you can quickly view them:

  1. If you have a modern browser, look for the Last Updated date text near the top of the article.
  2. If the text is underlined, you can select it.
  3. This will bring up a list of dates when the page was updated. (Note only dates since the beginning of 2004, when this new feature was created, will show up.)
  4. When you select a date, the text that was updated on that date will be highlighted.
  5. As you scroll down the page, you will see those highlighted sections.
