IRELAND: Eire Cancels Release of IRA prisoners
DUBLIN, Nov 10 (IPS) - The Irish government cancelled plans Wednesday for the early release of nine Irish Republican Army (IRA) prisoners following after a man was shot dead in Northern Ireland.
The killing of a postal worker by two suspected Republicans marred the cease fire agreed on by the IRA, and later by loyalist ultras, two months ago.
The release of the prisoners was to have been a response to the IRA action but it sparked an outcry in Northern ireland and also in ther irish republic.
The cancellation decision was announced by Minister of Justice Maire Geoghegan-Quinn after consultation with Prime Minister Albert Reynolds. _________________________________________________________________
