ITALY: Information Should Be Broadcast Abroad in Several Languages
SAO PAULO, Brazil, Dic 17 (IPS) - Information broadcast to Italians living abroad should be done in several languages, the Congress on Information for Italian Communities in Latin America concluded on Saturday.
Nearly 500 representatives of Italian associations and the media in Latin America, as well as Italian government officials, participated in the Dec. 15-17 conference, which agreed on 10 recommendations for the government in Rome.
The Italian state-run radio and television stations (RAI) should dispose of adequate means to comply with the obligations provided for by legislation on making Italian news and information more easily available, says the first clause.
The diffusion via satellite of written and audiovisual information is indispensable for a truly interactive relationship between Italian communities abroad and their country of origin, a second point says.
The expansion of RAI satellite signals was also repeatedly called for in the conference.
Newspapers and radio and television programmes in Latin American Italian communities also called for government funds to be focused on the broadcasting of information abroad, while this should be done in several languages.
The Sao Paulo Congress was one of several meetings sponsored by the General Council on Italians Abroad (CGIE) and the emigration division of the foreign ministry, which seek to renovate relations between Italy and its "fellow citizens" living around the world.
The Latin American recommendations will join with those made in the United States and Europe for the government to adopt measures following a "summary meeting" to be held next year in Rome, said vice-minister of foreign relations and CGIE director Vincenzo Trentino.
